We designed a quirky yet sophisticated annual report for the Coolidge Corner Theatre that nearly tripled their donations.
Starting with a mountain of disparate content, we crafted a stand-out publication filled with engaging data visualizations and dramatic layouts that illuminate the theater’s unique programming and engagement with the community.
Beautiful full-page photos of the theater’s interior along with stills from some of the year’s top movies set in a “wide-screen” format evoke the movie-going experience. The report title, along with every film The Coolidge screened in 2014, are printed in gloss varnish on the front and back covers for a subtle but stunning effect.
We combined some rarely-used typefaces from the theater’s original brand guidelines with their trusty brand fonts, then implemented them in new ways. The result is a quirky, original look that’s still entirely on-brand.
High-contrast display face Bodoni is used exclusively for large headlines and quotes, while serif Proforma — their standard for day-to-day communications — does the heavy lifting as body copy. Trade Gothic, a timeless sans serif, is used for subheads and labels throughout the book.
A palette derived from a film still coordinated beautifully with the theater’s brand colors of bright red, black, and gold. We added some softer complementary swatches for backgrounds, highlights, and secondary information, particularly for use in data visualizations.
In additional to having individual statistics and comparative data sprinkled throughout the report, we designed one cohesive spread to house the bulk of these elements right at the beginning of the book.
Unified by a world map with the origin of every foreign-language film the theater screened that year, unrelated data points like female directors, documentary topics, and awards garnered are brought together in an interesting way.
